Dry Eye Syndrome: Why Screen Time Is Drying Out Your Eyes — and What Actually Helps
If your eyes burn, feel gritty or water excessively after a day at the computer, you may have dry eye disease — one of the most common conditions we treat in Pune's IT workforce.

What is dry eye syndrome?
Dry eye disease happens when your eyes either do not produce enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly. Tears are not just water — they are a three-layer film of oil, water and mucus that keeps the cornea smooth, clear and comfortable. When any layer breaks down, the eye surface becomes inflamed and irritated.
Paradoxically, dry eyes often water a lot. That reflex tearing is the eye's emergency response to dryness — the tears are poor quality and evaporate almost immediately.
Why screen work is the biggest trigger
We normally blink 15–20 times a minute. While concentrating on a screen, that drops to 5–7 blinks — and many of those are incomplete. Fewer blinks means the tear film is not refreshed, and the oily layer from the eyelid glands is not spread properly. Add air-conditioned offices, ceiling fans and long commutes in traffic, and dry eye becomes almost inevitable for Pune's IT professionals.
- Reduced and incomplete blinking during screen focus
- Air conditioning and fans accelerating tear evaporation
- Contact lens wear combined with long screen hours
- Meibomian (oil) gland blockage from incomplete blinking
- Hormonal changes, especially after 40 and in menopause
- Certain medicines: antihistamines, antidepressants, some blood-pressure tablets
Symptoms you should not ignore
Left untreated, chronic dry eye inflames the corneal surface and can cause permanent damage to tear-producing glands. Early treatment is far simpler than late treatment.
- Burning, stinging or a sandy, gritty feeling
- Eyes that water excessively, especially outdoors
- Redness that worsens through the day
- Blurred vision that clears with blinking
- Difficulty with night driving due to glare
- Contact lenses that feel intolerable by evening
Home habits that genuinely help
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
- Position your screen slightly below eye level so your eyelids cover more of the eye
- Blink fully and consciously during long reading or screen sessions
- Avoid sitting directly under fans or AC vents
- Stay hydrated and include omega-3 rich foods (flaxseed, walnuts, fish) in your diet
- Apply a warm compress to closed eyelids for 5 minutes daily to unblock oil glands
How we treat dry eye at the clinic
Effective treatment starts with finding out why your eyes are dry. At Dr. Murkute's O2 Bone & Eye Care Clinic we examine the tear film, the corneal surface under the slit lamp, and the health of the meibomian glands before prescribing anything.
Depending on the cause, treatment may include preservative-free lubricating drops, anti-inflammatory drops for the eye surface, eyelid hygiene routines, gels for night-time protection, or procedures to express blocked oil glands. Most patients improve significantly within 4 to 6 weeks of consistent treatment.
