Overview

Vision extends far beyond what we look at directly — peripheral vision helps with awareness of surroundings and safe movement. Damage to the optic nerve, such as from glaucoma, typically affects peripheral vision first and gradually, often unnoticed until it is advanced.

A visual field test systematically checks sensitivity to light across your entire field of vision and plots any gaps or weak areas.

How It Works

One eye is tested at a time using the Appasamy perimeter. You look at a fixed central point and press a button whenever you notice a small flash of light appear anywhere in your field of vision. The device records which points you saw and which you missed, generating a map of your visual field.

Procedure Steps

• One eye is patched while the other eye is tested
• Positioning at the Appasamy perimeter with chin and forehead support
• Fixation on a central target while light stimuli are presented
• Button pressed each time a light is seen; test repeated for the other eye
• Printed or digital results reviewed and compared to previous tests if available
