Overview

For clear vision, light entering the eye must focus precisely on the retina. A refractive error means the eye's shape or focusing power does not allow this to happen exactly, resulting in blurred vision that is fully or largely correctable with lenses.

The main types are myopia (near-sightedness, difficulty seeing distant objects), hypermetropia (far-sightedness, difficulty with near objects), astigmatism (an irregularly curved cornea causing distorted vision at all distances), and presbyopia (age-related loss of near focusing ability, usually after 40).
